Keynote Speaker - Helen Escobedo
Helen Escobedo is a sculptor and installation artist who maintains
a dual residency in Mexico City and Frankfort, Germany. At 15 she attended
Mexico City College, and then in the 1950s she received a 3 year scholarship
to the Royal College of Art in London. She had her first solo show at
the Galleria de Arte Mexicano in 1956.
In the 1960s, Escobedo began to explore new plastic materials and to
expand the scale of her vision. "Gateway to the Wind, a towering17
meter high concrete work, was her contribution to the Route of Friendship,
a "sculpture highway" for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.
"Gateway" was her first urban piece and led to other commissions
of "permanent and ephemeral installations" from New Zealand
to Europe, from Asia to the Americas. In 1974 she had her first large
museum exhibition at the Muse de Arte Moderno (Mexico).
In addition to making art, Escobedo has been director of the Department
of Museums and Galleries for the University of Mexico, and the
Museo de Arte Moderno. Her credits also include being a member of
Belgium's Royal Academy of Science, Arts and Letters, and a member of
the
board of dirctors for the International Sculpture Center. She has lectured
extensively and in 1991 she was awarded a Guggenheim scholarship.
A book on the installations of Helen Escobedo is currently underway.
